MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

GROUND FLOOR

Our multi-purpose exhibition space is located on the ground floor of the building, along with a shop and gallery stocking work by local artists and craftspeople.

FIRST FLOOR

The first floor focuses on Wirksworth's roots as an ancient lead mining town. Explore the hidden treasures inside the 'Dream Cave' and admire our stunning collection of 18th century clothes belonging to the local Gell Family.

SECOND FLOOR

Meet Jack Doxey and hear his story and discover Wirksworth's connections to George Eliot and DH Lawrence. Our 'Home Front' display focuses on Wirksworth people during the second world war. On the second floor landing is a wonderful, well preserved example of a 19th century Friendly Society banner.

T'owd Man is our emblem with his own rich and mysterious heritage. The name 'T'owd Man' or 'The Old Man' refers to a mysterious imp-like figure who brought luck to the lead miners. His carved image can be seen in St. Mary's Church, Wirksworth and a replica of that carving, comissioned by a local sculptor, is on display in the Heritage Centre.
